The City of Prijedor is located in the northwestern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, within the entity of the Republic of Srpska. Since its first mention as an independent settlement in records from the 17th century, Prijedor has undergone continuous development and transformation throughout its turbulent history. As a city with a rich historical heritage, it has gradually assumed the characteristics of a functional administrative and trade center, later evolving into an economic hub with well-developed urban features.

Although Prijedor is considered a relatively young city, numerous archaeological sites within its territory indicate that settlement in this area began several thousand years ago, dating back to pre-Roman and Roman times. This early habitation is closely linked to the region’s mineral wealth and the extraction of raw materials, which remains one of most recognizable attributes. At the transition between the 20th and 21st centuries, during the economic shift from a planned to a market-oriented economy, the industrial landscape changed significantly—large industrial systems related to the pulp and paper production and mining sector were either shut down or partially transformed. Economic development increasingly began to rely on entrepreneurship and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), with the manufacturing industry—owing to the city’s strong industrial heritage—being recognized as the backbone of growth.

The development of industry was accompanied by the advancement of public sector services, the education system, and training programs, which have been progressively adapting to market needs. Other societal sectors have also played a role in enhancing the city’s quality of life. In this regard, the city’s cultural and historical heritage stands out the most, rooted in a rich and diverse cultural tradition, a large number of renowned creators from various artistic fields, and an extensive collection of archaeological and historical materials spanning different eras.

According to the latest census conducted in 2013, Prijedor had 80,916 registered inhabitants residing in 71 settlements (organized into 49 local communities), with about half of the population living in rural areas. The total area of the city is 834 square kilometers.
